The indigenous Wampis tribe in Peru’s Amazon seized a grounded military helicopter late on Sunday and took at least eight public officials hostage in an effort to draw attention to an oil spill that polluted its territory. The Wampis community is attempting to force the Peruvian government to respond to their desperate pleas for help more than a month after oil company Petroperu’s 40-year-old pipeline spilled 1,000 barrels of oil in Mayuriaga.
