Scientists Found a 1,700 Mile Crack Across the USA. Here’s What You Need to Know

Is America at risk for Great earthquakes spanning across the full United States? “Cracks Across America”, in Rift zones, may conceal large fracture type faults where scientists may not be able to identify where these hidden fractures may unleash catastrophic earthquakes.

LOS ANGELES, CA (California Network) – In Nov 1981, a study was published that rocked the scientific world, and sparked concern in FEMA circles, in which a 1,700 mile “Crack Across America” was discovered. Worse yet, this crack cuts through the New Madrid Seismic Zone, where in 1811 and 1812 three giant earthquakes devastatingly struck the center of America. Scientists have been struggling, since then, to answer the question of what risk this mega feature may pose to our heartland today. Recently, and less known, is a study from an independent geologic research set of work [2], that has identified a possible second “Crack Through America” that crosses into and through the same volatile New Madrid Seismic Zone.

The original 1,700 mile “Crack Across America” was found using modern day gravity mapping satellite data, and using computers, to process the measurements [1]. In 1981, Dr. Raymond E. Arvidson of Washington University in St. Louis used data processing techniques where 600,000 discrete gravity measurements, from 20 years of scientific data gathering, to synthesize a map. The results revealed an astonishing ancient rift in the North American crust that extends some 1,700 miles from Idaho to the southern Appalachian Mountains. New discoveries, from more recent research, has extended this “Crack” anomaly in where it combines with a MegaShear [3] zone to the middle of Washington State and possibly with the Olympic-Wallowa Lineament (OWL) [2] – which reaches to the Pacific Ocean near Port Angeles Washington. Thus the total length may total nearly 2,200 miles.

This ancient rift, estimated to be a billion years old, was dubbed the “Missouri Gravity Low” in the eastern most section of the “Crack Across America”. Another rift, 60 miles by 30 miles, underlying the Mississippi river valley, called the “Reelfoot Rift”, was found to cross through the Missouri Gravity Low and head to the northeast/southwest. These two rift zones intersect at the New Madrid Seismic Zone. Over 4,000 small earthquakes have been mapped within these intersecting “rift” regions since 1974.

A maverick geologist, Jack Reed, performed a study in mapping the frequency and location of larger magnitude earthquakes trending along the northeast trending lineament of the “ReelFoot Rift”. The resulting data indicated another concerning revelation – that a possible second “Crack Through America” connects the Reelfoot Rift with the well known St. Lawrence rift zone in Canada. Just as the New Madrid Seismic zone revealed its active potential in its “rift zones”, a magnitude 7.9 earthquake, in 1663, struck near Charlevoix and revealed its power in the St. Lawrence rift zone.

Perhaps a partial clue to what may link to the existence and nature of the “Crack Across America” and the “Crack Through America” is the Midcontinential Rift (MCR) System. Research has identified that a movement direction of the MCR, from tremendous intraplate pressure, forced a southern expansion of this large rift, where the southern edge traversed directly towards the New Madrid Seismic Zone. The Midcontinental Rift thus forms a horseshoe that straddles and reaches, by its tips, at or near the two major “Crack” lineaments. Intraplate pressure could be intensified into these intersecting lineaments, including the resulting pressure(s) at the New Madrid Seismic Zone.

What can make these – 70-90 mile wide and thousands of miles long – low gravity crack lineament features so dangerous is their hidden fractures, buried in the earth’s crust below. These low gravity areas are called “Rift zones” where the continental crust tried to pull itself apart, but failed. The thinning of the crust enabled lighter density young rock to intrude, thus resulting in the lower gravity characteristics in the rift zones. Other recent studies have suggested that the thinning of the crust may occur from the delamination of heavier crustal rock “falling” down into the earth’s mantle. However, in the case of linear features of these long distance “lineament rift zones”, the case of random delamination from “falling” into the mantle would not be able to explain these highly organized structures.

What is known, is that these linear rift zones have exhibited the ability to unleash very large earthquakes. This has been aptly demonstrated by the three 1811-1812 New Madrid M7-M8 earthquakes and the large 1663 M7.9 Charlevoix Earthquake. Since the regularity of such earthquakes are measured in centuries, scientists are unable to identify if any section of these linear rift zones may be at risk of a sudden large earthquake.

The bigger the length and depth of a buried fracture and its subsequent pressure induced release, the greater the chances for this rupture to unleash a giant earthquake. Indeed, the three 1811 to 1812 M7-M8 earthquakes had rupture release areas comparable to any single biggest locked segment of the San Andreas CA fault region could do – except in the New Madrid quakes, it did it all in the same location with each huge quake spaced only a month apart. With thousands of miles of possible buried fractures within these lineaments, it’s possible that changes in intraplate pressure may be all that is necessary to activate a segment. Another unanswered question is if Yellowstone Supervolcano is susceptible or interactive with this lineament. Indeed, in 2002, geologists observed distant triggering of earthquake swarming at Yellowstone from the M7.9 Denali Alaska earthquake [4]. As the Denali earthquake was 2,000 miles distant, what would happen if a large earthquake within a rift zone lineament was much closer to Yellowstone? Certainly it would be useful to know if there were any susceptible buried fractures in the nearby lineament that traverses near Yellowstone Supervolcano.

However, scientists are placed at a disadvantage, in earthquake risk assessment, since any hidden fractures are buried deep in what is called the “Midcontinental Basement”. Without having any data to the size, length, and number of any hidden fractures, it renders any risk analysis “blind”. Only a paleogeologic assessment of past locations, patterns, frequency, and magnitude of earthquakes are scientists able to form a type of a risk assessment. Compounding any risk assessment is understanding the rupture process of these hidden fractures. Scientists refer to these as “Intraplate earthquakes” as the quake occurs within the interior of a tectonic plate. Pressure, within the buried fracture (i.e. “fault”), may instigate an earthquake. GPS, strain sensors, and even inSAR (interferometric Synthetic Aperature Radar) are of no use to proffering answers to these questions as these fractures are inaccessible since they are deep below – while the sediment or crust above hides any telltale sign of crustal creep or stress.

Because of risk assessment uncertainty, FEMA and other emergency agencies are left to estimating the risk to America’s infrastructure based on a worst case paleogeologic history (i.e. the maximum at any moment). Indeed, in 1999, FEMA listed as one of the major top four hazards in the United States, as “catastrophic”, would be a giant earthquake striking the central U.S.

Because scientists are unable to predict the timing nor the location of the next large earthquake in these Rift zones, there is a difference of viewpoints, regarding cost tradeoffs of implementation and/or upgrades of rigorous seismic building codes, between the scientific community and the emergency management organizations. Complicating this situation is that earthquakes, that occur in the central or eastern United States, affect much larger areas than similar magnitudes in the western United States. The FEMA guide references that the 1906 M7.8 San Francisco CA earthquake was felt 350 miles away in the middle of Nevada. In contrast, the 1811 New Madrid Earthquake was reported to have rung church bells in Boston, Massachusetts, 1,000 miles away. Differences in the geologic makeup of the earth’s crust east and west of the Rocky Mountains are noted to be the cause of this stronger conduction of the earthquake’s P-waves and S-waves creating the distant shaking contrast.

As the rate of earthquakes have been increasing in the New Madrid Seismic Zone and in other parts of the Central United States, such as in Oklahoma, there are concerns that intraplate tectonic pressure may be driving these trends. Other areas, such as the Wabash Valley and East Tennessee Seismic zones also produce earthquakes on a regular basis. Quoting from the CUSEC – “Depending on earthquake magnitude and location, each of these zones could impact multiple states, causing major physical, social and economic disruption in a region that is home to more than forty million people.”… “On April 18, 2008, a magnitude 5.4 earthquake struck near Mt. Carmel, Illinois. This relatively minor earthquake was felt in 28 states and Canada and was responsible for an estimated $3 million in non-structural damages and damaged at least 240 structures in Illinois alone. The Mt. Carmel earthquake shows the widespread impact a larger earthquake might have on the region”

Scientists now believe the Eastern U.S. could have a major quake of its own, and events like the New Madrid Great quakes may happen again, but there is no way to guess where or when.

Update : 900pm CT March 20 2016 – As this video was processing, a large M6.6 earthquake (M6.4 revised) struck North of Japan in the Kurial Islands / Kamchatka Russia … striking in the silent area shown in this video with the exact expected magnitude (Mid M6.0 range).

The exact area warned in this video was struck by the expected M6.0+ movement within hours of the forecast being issued.

The progression of M5.0+ events across the West Pacific over the past 7 days is rather obvious.

Things began to move in earnest this past week, culminating in Alaska on Friday (March 18-19 UTC time).

Now in the new week, we see the silent area North of Japan has been struck by a M6.6 earthquake at Kuril Islands / Kamchatka Russia.

The area near Kamchatka has been rather silent in light of the flurry of larger M5.0+ earthquakes which developed to the South this whole past week.. add in the multiple M6.0+ earthquakes which occurred to the EAST in Alaska near Mount Atka Volcano, this middle ground area in the Kamchatka region is the spot I just named to watch in my earthquake forecast video.

The video is still processing, but was recorded earlier today, naming out the region North of Japan for Mid M6.0 activity to strike this week.

Now, before I can even get the video uploaded, the expected mid M6.0 event struck. As the forecast called for, a M6.6 has struck the Kamchatka region North of Japan.

Be on watch for new deep earthquakes which will determine new areas to watch for shallower larger movement, also watch the silent areas which haven’t shown large movement yet.

The forecast will be out shortly, you can mark off the North of Japan location , but still keep watch across the region spanning Japan to Taiwan (Izu ridge additionally) for possible larger activity to develop over the next 7 days.

West coast of the United States.. South California, interior volcanoes at the Nevada / California border, edge of the craton fracking operations across Colorado, Texas, Kanas, and Oklahoma… be on watch for larger activity to strike in the M4.0 range.. could shake things up as far as the East coast of the USA with smaller events spanning all the way to New England / SE Quebec Canada / Maine.

Central America needs to be on watch for possible new volcanic activity, as well as new larger seismic activity in the M6.0 to M6.5 range across Nicaragua and Panama into North Colombia.

Eastward across the Caribbean , South Mexico / Honduras across Cayman Trench to the Dominican Republic now needs to watch for noteworthy activity over the next 7 days based upon the M6.0 to the East at Barbuda, and the swarms striking off shore of El Salvador. The area between South Mexico and Dominican Republic must be under stress, could be in the same magnitude range as the current M5.0+ events off the coast.

South America, watch the middle of the Silent Zone, which puts us in the Bolivia, South Peru, North Chile region as the main spot to watch for renewed larger movement to strike .. larger , as in at least 1 magnitude larger than the current swarm of near M5.0 striking to the South across Chile.

We could also see new movement strike in Argentina to the East IF new deep earthquakes occur in the area.

Keep watch for new deep earthquakes which could switch all of this up OR accentuate the current magnitudes forecast. If the deep movement strikes the expected areas near Fiji, Indonesia, and Chile, then we can expect the forecast to remain steady this week.

IF new deep earthquakes occur in odd regions to the East, West, or North of the Pacific, this would switch things up dramatically.

Some Alaskans were woken up in the middle of the night by a 7.1-magnitude earthquake that rattled buildings, knocked out power for thousands, and led to some evacuations.

The earthquake struck Sunday at 1:30 a.m. local time in the area of Old Iliamna, about 162 miles south of Anchorage, said the U.S. Geological Survey. The Alaska Earthquake Center recorded about 30 aftershocks in the first two-and-a-half hours after the quake. The largest, at 3:37 a.m. local time, was measured at magnitude 4.3.

There is no threat of a tsunami as a result of the quake. There have been no reports of injuries so far.

At least 10,000 people lost power in the Anchorage area. The city’s fire department said in a tweet that it is “very busy with reports of gas odors, alarm systems sounding, broken water lines, etc.”

11/01/2015 — Global Earthquake Forecast — West Coast Warning , Yellowstone Fissure + Volcanoes


After last weeks major uptick in earthquake activity, producing multiple M7.0+ events in the West Pacific + Asia — we now see a new round of deep earthquakes has struck below the West Pacific plate.

New “silence” has formed off the coast of the Pacific Northwest, and along far South California — multiple dormant volcanoes now moving (have moved) up the West Coast of California, and also through Nevada, Oregon, and Washington state.

Add in the large fissure which formed in Central Eastern Wyoming in the Bighorn Mountains, East of Yellowstone supervolcano , and a greater picture of seismic unrest along the West coast of the United States begins to take shape.

There may indeed be large earthquake activity to strike the West coast of the United States in the next week or so, most likely to strike near one of the already moving dormant volcanoes. Maybe some movement in Southeast California might take place near one of the dormant volcanic buttes in the region.

Internationally, North Japan might take a hit this week with a larger event following this previous weeks M5.4, and the new deep earthquakes below Japan + Eastern China. Could produce a new volcanic eruption after several weeks with nothing to report from the area.

Rare Earthquake Warning Issued for Oklahoma

Mile for mile, there are almost as many earthquakes rattling Oklahoma as California this year. This major increase in seismic shaking led to a rare earthquake warning today (May 5) from the U.S. Geological Survey and the Oklahoma Geological Survey.

In a joint statement, the agencies said the risk of a damaging earthquake — one larger than magnitude 5.0 — has significantly increased in central Oklahoma.

Geologists don’t know when or where the state’s next big earthquake will strike, nor will they put a number on the increased risk. “We haven’t seen this before in Oklahoma, so we had some concerns about putting a specific number on the chances of it,” Robert Williams, a research geophysicist with the USGS Earthquake Hazards Program in Golden, Colorado, told Live Science. “But we know from other cases around the world that if you have an increasing number of small earthquakes, the chances of a larger one will go up.” [Watch 2500+ Oklahoma Earthquakes Since 2012 (Video)]

That’s why earthquakes of magnitude 5 and larger are more frequent in states such as California and Alaska, where thousands of smaller temblors hit every year.

This is the first time the USGS has issued an earthquake warning for a state east of the Rockies, Williams said. Such seismic hazard assessments are more typically issued for Western states following large quakes, to warn residents of the risk of damaging aftershocks, he said.

The geological agencies took action after the rate of earthquakes in Oklahoma outpaced that of even California for the first few months of 2014. (California regained the lead in April.) [The 10 Biggest Earthquakes in History]

“The rate of earthquakes increased dramatically in March and April,” Williams said. “That alerted us to examine this further and put out this advisory statement.”

While Oklahoma’s buildings can withstand light earthquakes, the damage from a magnitude-5 temblor could be widespread. Oklahoma’s last major earthquake was in November 2011, when a magnitude-5.6 earthquake centered near Prague, Oklahoma, destroyed 14 homes and injured at least two people.

“Building owners and government officials should have a special concern for older, unreinforced brick structures, which are vulnerable to serious damage during sufficient shaking,” Bill Leith, a USGS senior science adviser for earthquakes and geologic hazards, said in the joint statement.

While scientists haven’t ruled out natural causes for the increase, many researchers suspect the deep injection wells used for the disposal of fracking wastewater could be causing the earthquake activity. Fracking, short for hydraulic fracturing, is a method of extracting oil and gas by cracking open underground rock.

Ongoing studies have found a link between Oklahoma’s high-volume wastewater injection wells and regions with an uptick in earthquakes.

According to the USGS, the number of quakes magnitude-3 and stronger jumped by 50 percent in the past eight months in Oklahoma. Some 183 earthquakes of magnitude 3 or greater struck between October 2013 and April 14, 2014. The state’s long-term average from 1978 to 2008 was only two earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or larger per year.

If the earthquakes are caused by wastewater injection, then the activity could continue or decrease with future changes in well usage in the state.

“We don’t know if this earthquake rate is going to continue,” Williams said. “It could go to a higher rate or lower, so the increased chances of a damaging quake could change in the future.”

Renewed activity has again begun to appear across the Pacific, extending across the North American Craton.

A new article is circulating in the Main Stream Media regarind a “mega-quake” which could strike the Pacific Northwest Cascadia subduction zone. Fearmongering talk by the media saying Seattle will be destroyed, and everything West of I-5 from Washington to California would be destroyed.

These reports (in my opinion) is highly fear laced, and should be decried for being alarmist in the outlandish media suppositions.

People talking about 100-600 foot tall waves, and M9.2 earthquakes along the Cascadia which will devastate the West coast?

While this is a remote possibility, we have a much greater chances of 6.0 – 8.0M earthquakes in the region which will NOT send giant waves to shore, but will cause water / food / power shortages.

We have a current forecast threat for 6.0M earthquake activity over the next 7 days to strike between North California and the Axial seamount off the shores of Washington State.

Also on watch, the far SW United States reaching into Baja Mexico — watching for 4.0M to 5.0M activity over the next 7 days.

New 4.0M movement should begin again at the Oklahoma / Kansas fracking operations.

New 3.0M to 4.0M activity should hit the Southern United States again near Mississippi / Alabama.

New 3.0M to 4.0M activity should hit the far Northeast United States (Southeast Canada) near the Quebec border.

New 4.0M activity should strike at multiple volcanic locations in California, Nevada, Oregon, Arizona, and Utah.

Each location should see a small swarm which makes it stand out compared to single earthquake events elsewhere.

In the West Pacific, watch Central Japan along the Izu Trench, Southward to Okinawa. Watch Fiji to Soloman Island as well.. both areas should see renewed mid 6.0M range earthquakes.

Watch also for new deep earthquakes which could add larger earthquakes into the mix. Currently still just 1 deep earthquake in the past 7 days (as of July 17, 2015 1130am CDT).

Watch the Eastern India border for at least 1 5.0M event, could lead upwards of 6.0M .

Watch West of India at the Afghanistan Tajikistan border for at least one (most likely a swarm) of moderate to large earthquakes (West of Kathmandu).

Europe, Greece should see renewed mid M5.0 to low M6.0 activity.. English Channel should see at least one M3.0 to M4.0 event.. may be along the shores of France instead of the Channel, or could be just a bit North near London.

Central and South America — be on watch for new developments near the border of Chile + Peru… could be a single larger event in the upper 6.0 range.

All of this should occur in the next 7-9 days from today (7/17/2015). Giving an additional 2 day window in case we see more deep earthquakes in the West Pacific.

Over the past 48 hours the whole of the West coast of the United States has moved on at least a 4.0 magnitude level or greater.

Currently, another mid-4.0 magnitude (4.2 M) earthquake has struck the West coast, off the shores of Oregon, near the Axial undersea volcano (which is currently erupting).

This is a huge development to see, please pay close attention to the regional seismic activity over the next week (currently May 22 2015).

This new West coast earthquake unrest began with a 4.2M at the border of Alaska and British Colombia Canada (as expected).

The Alaska activity was shortly followed by a new swarm of earthquakes at the Salton Sea Volcanic buttes (located in Southern California).

The Southern California volcanic earthquake swarm was shortly followed by a 4.1M event in Napa Vallay / Gorda Escarpment zone near San Francisco, CA.

All the aforementioned activity has now been followed by a 4.2 magnitude earthquake off the shores of Oregon.  These events all point towards Vancouver Island BC as a “silent zone” to watch, along with Washington State.

Worthy to note, this Oregon earthquake occurred very close to the location of a new underwater volcano which was detected along the Axial Seamount, which is located due West of the Oregon Coast.

Also, keep in mind the oil pipeline rupture along the West coast of California near Los Angeles, and the flurry of dormant volcanoes which have shown movement along the states of California, Oregon, and Washington state…. all these events signs of building pressure in the region.

After a flurry of West coast earthquake activity yesterday going into this morning (May 22), now an extremely rare 5.4M earthquake has struck South Nevada.

Additionally, a new swarm of earthquakes is now developing at the South Nevada epicenter.

The location in Nevada appears to be an ancient dormant volcanic butte. The nearby dormant volcano is surely the culprit for this 5.4M earthquake today.

Search the coordinates, then look at the cliff sides to the East of the epicenter, you will see the old basalt flows, and the higher dome of the butte.

If you search the coordinates you will also come to find that there is an abandoned Copper mine (“Cherokee Copper mine”) located VERY close to the earthquake epicenter.

A west coast earthquake watch was issued yesterday. We have been watching the multiple dormant volcanoes show movement in the region, along with this 5.4 magnitude in Nevada.

Over the past week, the Markagunt volcanic plateau moved in South Utah, and now this dormant volcanic butte (unnamed) shows activity in South Nevada.

UPDATE – NHK report was typed (by them) wrong? Says 300 meters HEIGHT in the NHK article. Other articles say 15 meters high. It looks taller than 40 feet… hmm.. some reports saying 10 meters WIDE.. other reports saying 30 meters WIDE… hmm..

Regardless of the difference in footage, ANY footage moving upwards in Japan is worthy of note. Normally the crust moves in millimeters and inches.. not meters and feet!

A massive sudden (1 day) rise of land from the sea has occurred along the coast of Hokkaido Japan.

Major global earthquake activity is taking place, and serious crustal movement is obviously underway in the region around North Japan.

The new land began rising from the sea yesterday morning (April 24, 2015) with just a 1 meter rise (3 feet), then began rising rapidly, the event is still ongoing as of April 25th into 26th 2015.

The new land mass has now risen over 50 feet and 300 meters long (near 1,000 feet), and near 10 meters wide (30 feet)! Not ‘small’ by any means, and a very rare occurrence to top it off.

This is being attributed to crustal movement in the area.

friend Tom Lupshu just released the 1st video below in which he warns us that nearly one quarter of the northern elk herd at Yellowstone National Park are missing according to the annual winter count. We learn that biologists aren’t sure if there has been a stunning decline in the herd to account for these missing numbers or if there are other factors at play. Tom also shares with us that helium releases are now at 1000 times above normal while a complete media blackout also exists.

3/26/2014 — Volcanic Earthquakes — Yellowstone and California — Animals giving warning?

 

 

Over the past 48 hours, a noticeable increase in seismic activity has occurred across the Western United States.

 

Specifically, a swarm of earthquakes has occurred extending from the Western edge of the Yellowstone magma chamber, now Eastward into the center of the National Park itself.

 

This building pressure is now manifesting as multiple 3.0M+ earthquakes, all at a 3.0mile or greater depth inside the Yellowstone magma chamber.

 

As if Yellowstone were not enough, the pressure is also translating to earthquakes occurring farther Southwest from Yellowstone, along the deformed edge of the North American Craton, extending into Central California , along the subduction zone of the North American Plate (and the Pacific Plate).

The heavy earthquake activity along the West Coast of the United States , over the past few weeks, has now translated in the craton displacement that we were expecting.

 

The earthquakes inside the magma chamber at Yellowstone, and the earthquakes now occurring at dormant volcanic chains along South / Central California, mean we can expect further activity in the near term to INCREASE.

 

The increase in activity along the edge of the craton will continue into the near term future due to the overall Pacific displacement occurring internationally.

 

Until things cool off internationally in the West Pacific, we can expect sizable displacement to occur along our plate in North America.  This means, Yellowstone, Colorado, Oklahoma, and other areas along the edge of the edge of the craton need to be aware of the possibility of movement in the near term.

 

Also.. the odd man out, Southern California , near Baja, sits primed, and now showing slight volcanic chamber activity.  Expect Salton Sea and Mono Lake to be showing some movement soon.

 

Earlier this past week.. we made note of the multiple UNREPORTED earthquakes at Yellowstone..

Yellowstone Magma Chamber Earthquake Swarm — USGS Censoring Activity 3/25/2014

Over the past week, several reports have been coming in from viewers, telling me to check the charts in Yellowstone. People saying the charts are showing UNREPORTED activity on multiple stations across the famous Supervolcano (national park).

Indeed, activity was occurring this past week, but NOT being counted on the USGS public feeds as earthquakes.

Earthquakes at Yellowstone not being reported? What is this madness?

After checking the actual charts, indeed it is confirmed, there has been earthquake movement GREATER than 2.5M across the area, the charts do not lie……

Move forward a few days, now currently March 25, 2014 — after the flurry of UNREPORTED activity — and now the USGS is showing THREE 3.0M+ events over the past 24 hours.

The magma chamber for the supervolcano has been found to extend further West than originally thought. Confirmed now via subterranean “soundings” taken via ground penetrating RADAR, the chamber extends as far West as the Oregon State Line.


Compare the “reported” 3.0M+ events shown on the charts below, to the charts over the past few days, shown above.

The charts above show similar sized activity. However no earthquakes were reported at Yellowstone corresponding to the charts above.

This means censorship is occurring at some point. The earthquakes on the charts earlier this week, were not reported as earthquakes to the public.

Move forward 2-3 days… March 24, 2014 .. THREE earthquakes, greater than 3.0M, now showing on the Yellowstone charts, and also being publicly admitted on the USGS feeds.

Tension mounting on Pacific Plate: region of Kamchatka rocked by scores of earthquakes

May 20, 2013 KAMCHATKA A massive earthquake swarm has occurred in the region of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy, Russia. More than 20 earthquakes have struck the region in the last 22 hours- the strongest of which was a 5.9 magnitude earthquake, which rattled the seafloor at a depth of 16.5 km deep. The latest seismic flare-up along this region reflects growing agitation on one of the planet’s largest tectonic plates- the Pacific plate. Increasing seismic volatility along this region of Kamchatka could have serious ramifications for every tectonic plate that comes into contact with the Pacific plate- from the South Pacific to South America. A similar, more intense earthquake swarm occurred along the periphery of the Pacific Plate near the Santa Cruz Islands in February of this year. Is the Pacific plate on the verge of a large-scale change?
The geology of the region: The Kuril-Kamchatka arc extends approximately 2,100 km from Hokkaido, Japan, along the Kuril Islands and the Pacific coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula to its intersection with the Aleutian arc near the Commander Islands, Russia. It marks the region where the Pacific plate subducts into the mantle beneath the Okhotsk micro-plate, part of the larger North American plate. This subduction is responsible for the generation of the Kuril Islands chain, active volcanoes located along the entire arc, and the deep offshore Kuril-Kamchatka trench. Relative to a fixed North America plate, the Pacific plate is moving towards the northwest at a rate that increases from 75 mm/year near the northern end of the arc to 83 mm/year in the south. Plate motion is predominantly convergent along the Kuril-Kamchatka arc with obliquity increasing towards the southern section of the arc. The subducting Pacific plate is relatively old, particularly adjacent to Kamchatka where its age is greater than 100 Ma. Consequently, the Wadati-Benioff zone is well defined to depths of approximately 650 km. The central section of the arc is comprised of an oceanic island arc system, which differs from the continental arc systems of the northern and southern sections. Oblique convergence in the southern Kuril arc results in the partitioning of stresses into both trench-normal thrust earthquakes and trench-parallel strike-slip earthquakes, and the westward translation of the Kuril forearc. This westward migration of the Kuril forearc currently results in collision between the Kuril arc in the north and the Japan arc in the south, resulting in the deformation and uplift of the Hidaka Mountains in central Hokkaido. The Kuril-Kamchatka arc is considered one of the most seismically active regions in the world. Deformation of the overriding North America plate generates shallow crustal earthquakes, whereas slip at the subduction zone interface between the Pacific and North America plates generates interplate earthquakes that extend from near the base of the trench to depths of 40 to 60 km. At greater depths, Kuril-Kamchatka arc earthquakes occur within the subducting Pacific plate and can reach depths of approximately 650 km. –USGS

Earth reeling from nine major earthquakes, striking in 5 days

February 2, 2013EARTH – An earthquake of magnitude 6.7 struck off the coast of the Solomon Islands (Santa Cruz) in the Pacific Ocean, the U.S. Geological Survey said on Friday. The quake was later downgraded by the USGS to a 6.3 magnitude event. The depth of the quake was 10 km (6.2 miles) and the epicenter was 68 km southwest of Lata. The quake hit at 9:16 a.m. local time on Saturday. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center did not immediately issue any alerts on its website. This quake was underscored by an even  stronger 6.9 magnitude earthquake that just struck the Hokkaido region of East Japan on February 2nd. This is the ninth major earthquake to strike the planet in the last five days. The present cluster of earthquakes began with a 6.0 event in Eastern Kazakhstan on January 28th, following a full moon on January 27, 2013. Perhaps, it may not be readily apparent to most that our planet appears to now be inching towards the spectrum of some major cataclysmic event. This approaching black swan occurrence is characterized by the gradual escalation of geological activity of a violent seismic and volcanic nature. 44 volcanic eruptive events have already been recorded for the month of January; where there was only 77 chronicled for the entire year of 2012. The on-going volcanic activity in Kamchatka also provides compelling testament that massive changes are now taking place within the planet’s interior. No less than 4 volcanoes on the Far Eastern peninsula of Kamchatka are erupting simultaneous, though all the volcanoes lie in relative close proximity to each other (with a 110 km radius). Even more interesting, the magma flow fueling each volcanic system appears to emanting from a separate magma source. However, what’s even more disconcerting is the fact that  Plosky Tolbachik volcano awakened from 40 years of dormancy and is now ejecting massive rivers of lava across the landscape of Kamchatka. Russian scientists attest this is the first time rivers of lava have ever flowed from one of the Kamchatka volcanoes during the Holocene period. Large-scale protracted effusive eruptions, such as these, are generally fueled by a deep magma source. Most originate from a magma plume from deep inside the planet’s crust. Both of the planet’s volcanoes, which have had large effusive eruptions in the past, Kileaua (Hawaii) and Mount Etna (Italy) both lie over magma plumes- Kamchatka’s Plosky Tolbchik volcano does not. Kamchatka peninsula, which has a total land mass that is slightly larger than Germany, is one of the most active parts of the infamous “Ring of Fire,” the zone of volcanic and seismic activity that encircles the Pacific Ocean. Three tectonic plates — the North American Plate, the Okhotsk Plate, and the Pacific Plate — collide beneath Kamchatka, with the peninsula’s coastal range boasting 30 active volcanoes. The crust is thinning here, and is becoming more fractured, as seismic stresses increase.

Ominous change in the South Pacific: The Santa Cruz seismic swarms are unfolding against an even more complex geological backdrop. Consequently, the effects of this massive seismic upheaval signals ominous change for the entire Pacific basin. To the west, the Indo-Australian plate is breaking up, after the largest strike-slip earthquakes ever recorded, struck off the coast of Indonesia in April of 2012. The Solomon Sea Plate, to the east, is an oceanic crustal plate remnant, which is disappearing into two subduction zones, one to its north, the other on its southwest margin. Its southeast margin runs along the Woodlark Rise, undefined compressive zone, which may be a transform fault marking the boundary with the adjoining Woodlark Plate. The northern subduction zone is located where the Solomon Plate is diving below the South Bismarck Plate to the northwest and the Pacific Plate to the northeast. The northwest part of the subduction zone is called the New Britain Subduction Zone. New Britain in Papua New Guinea is the volcanic island formed from this collision and resulting volcanism. The southwestern subduction zone is where the Solomon Pate is diving below the Indo-Australian Plate. According to scientists, the Indo-Australian plate may in the process of breaking up, and this heightened activity around the Santa Cruz Islands is placing additional pressures on a tectonic plate, already exhibiting strains of fracturing. We should continue to watch the region of Indonesia for massive changes to come, including very large-scale volcanic eruptions. Nearly all of the planet’s current 15 tectonic plates, and in some cases, sub-plates and volcanic arcs are heavily stressed by the recent violent mobility of tectonic plates shaken by earthquakes. I’ve never quite seen a pattern this fraught with potential hazards or as heavily laden with seismic tension. The planet is now experiencing a major geological crisis, and it’s showing some indication of worsening. –The Extinction Protocol

Nature of strong quakes changing? 7.1 magnitude earthquake strikes region of Banda Sea


December 11, 2012INDONESIA – A magnitude 7.3 (7.1 USGS) earthquake in the Banda Sea off Indonesia has been felt more than 600 kilometers away in Darwin. Geoscience Australia says there could be more aftershocks from the quake that shook the Top End of the Northern Territory overnight. Tremors were felt in Darwin and Katherine at about 2:30 am local time and were the strongest in the north for about 20 years. Overnight staff at the Darwin weather bureau evacuated their third-storey office while the building shook. Duty forecaster Angeline Prasad says the tremor was the strongest she has felt. “The building started shaking and it just became worse,” she said. “It is the worst tremor I’ve felt in Darwin. When things started falling off shelves we decided to go to an evacuation point, which is outside the building.” Geoscience senior seismologist Dr Mark Leonard says, while there have been quakes of a similar magnitude felt in Darwin before, people are describing last night’s tremor as particularly intense. “We have had a few reports from people saying they think it is the strongest, even though we know if you go back 20, 30 years there have been a number of earthquakes this size,” he said. “But there might have been some sort of focusing of the waves this time.” An engineering specialist says the tremor is a pointer to why building standards should be reviewed in northern Australia. Professor Kevin McKew from Central Queensland University says it is a warning that a large, damaging earthquake could strike at any time. “The big one is yet to come,” he said. “We haven’t had a great earthquake, as I would call it, but we’ve had plenty of warning calls. “I think it will happen; it’s just a matter of when will it happen. “We know it is probably a once in 300 or 400 year earthquake but we have no indication to say when it’s about to happen. But we just have to plan for it.” One Darwin resident says she was sleeping when her bed started moving. “The bed was really shaking violently, all my sliding doors rattling and windows were rattling, and the wardrobe was sliding violently and rattling,” she said. “It just seemed to go on and on and on, and then when it died down, it even had another violent shudder again. “It certainly got the adrenaline running.” Residents further south in Katherine, 200 kilometers south of Darwin, also felt tremors. Indonesian geophysics officials also said they had not received any reports of damage. The quake was felt only weakly in the districts of North Halamahera and Morotai which were closest to the epicenter, Indonesia’s National Disaster Mitigation Agency said in an update. –Radio Australia

Other notes: Things like lunar/solar alignments are given significance only on the day of occurence. Coronal holes can effect Kp index as well as Flaring/CMEs, so some variable data may be duplicative, but equally distributed in influence in favor and disfavor of the correlation. IF I add another variable, and I likely will, it will be a disruption of the magnetic connection between earth and sun. I believe this will solidify the process but cannot do so retroactively – the process begins.
