On internet privacy, be very afraid

‘Surveillance is the business model of the internet,’ Berkman and Belfer fellow says

In the internet era, consumers seem increasingly resigned to giving up fundamental aspects of their privacy for convenience in using their phones and computers, and have grudgingly accepted that being monitored by corporations and even governments is just a fact of modern life.

In fact, internet users in the United States have fewer privacy protections than those in other countries. In April, Congress voted to allow internet service providers to collect and sell their customers’ browsing data. By contrast, the European Union hit Google this summer with a $2.7 billion antitrust fine.

To assess the internet landscape, the Gazette interviewed cybersecurity expert Bruce Schneier, a fellow with the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society and the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at Harvard Kennedy School. Schneier talked about government and corporate surveillance, and about what concerned users can do to protect their privacy.

GAZETTE: After whistleblower Edward Snowden’s revelations concerning the National Security Agency’s (NSA) mass surveillance operation in 2013, how much has the government landscape in this field changed?

SCHNEIER: Snowden’s revelations made people aware of what was happening, but little changed as a result. The USA Freedom Act resulted in some minor changes in one particular government data-collection program. The NSA’s data collection hasn’t changed; the laws limiting what the NSA can do haven’t changed; the technology that permits them to do it hasn’t changed. It’s pretty much the same.

GAZETTE: Should consumers be alarmed by this?

SCHNEIER: People should be alarmed, both as consumers and as citizens. But today, what we care about is very dependent on what is in the news at the moment, and right now surveillance is not in the news. It was not an issue in the 2016 election, and by and large isn’t something that legislators are willing to make a stand on. Snowden told his story, Congress passed a new law in response, and people moved on.

GAZETTE: What about corporate surveillance? How pervasive is it?

SCHNEIER: Surveillance is the business model of the internet. Everyone is under constant surveillance by many companies, ranging from social networks like Facebook to cellphone providers. This data is collected, compiled, analyzed, and used to try to sell us stuff. Personalized advertising is how these companies make money, and is why so much of the internet is free to users. We’re the product, not the customer.

GAZETTE: Should they be stopped?

SCHNEIER: That’s a philosophical question. Personally, I think that in many cases the answer is yes. It’s a question of how much manipulation we allow in our society. Right now, the answer is basically anything goes. It wasn’t always this way. In the 1970s, Congress passed a law to make a particular form of subliminal advertising illegal because it was believed to be morally wrong. That advertising technique is child’s play compared to the kind of personalized manipulation that companies do today. The legal question is whether this kind of cyber-manipulation is an unfair and deceptive business practice, and, if so, can the Federal Trade Commission step in and prohibit a lot of these practices.

GAZETTE: Why doesn’t the commission do that? Why is this intrusion happening, and nobody does anything about it?

SCHNEIER: We’re living in a world of low government effectiveness, and there the prevailing neo-liberal idea is that companies should be free to do what they want. Our system is optimized for companies that do everything that is legal to maximize profits, with little nod to morality. Shoshana Zuboff, professor at the Harvard Business School, invented the term “surveillance capitalism” to describe what’s happening. It’s very profitable, and it feeds off the natural property of computers to produce data about what they are doing. For example, cellphones need to know where everyone is so they can deliver phone calls. As a result, they are ubiquitous surveillance devices beyond the wildest dreams of Cold War East Germany.

GAZETTE: But Google and Facebook face more restrictions in Europe than in the United States. Why is that?

SCHNEIER: Europe has more stringent privacy regulations than the United States. In general, Americans tend to mistrust government and trust corporations. Europeans tend to trust government and mistrust corporations. The result is that there are more controls over government surveillance in the U.S. than in Europe. On the other hand, Europe constrains its corporations to a much greater degree than the U.S. does. U.S. law has a hands-off way of treating internet companies. Computerized systems, for example, are exempt from many normal product-liability laws. This was originally done out of the fear of stifling innovation.

“Google knows quite a lot about all of us. No one ever lies to a search engine. I used to say that Google knows more about me than my wife does, but that doesn’t go far enough. Google knows me even better, because Google has perfect memory in a way that people don’t.”
               —Bruce Schneier,cybersecurity expert

GAZETTE: It seems that U.S. customers are resigned to the idea of giving up their privacy in exchange for using Google and Facebook for free. What’s your view on this?

SCHNEIER: The survey data is mixed. Consumers are concerned about their privacy and don’t like companies knowing their intimate secrets. But they feel powerless and are often resigned to the privacy invasions because they don’t have any real choice. People need to own credit cards, carry cellphones, and have email addresses and social media accounts. That’s what it takes to be a fully functioning human being in the early 21st century. This is why we need the government to step in.

GAZETTE: You’re one of the most well-known cybersecurity experts in the world. What do you do to protect your privacy online?

SCHNEIER: I don’t have any secret techniques. I do the same things everyone else does, and I make the same tradeoffs that everybody else does. I bank online. I shop online. I carry a cellphone, and it’s always turned on. I use credit cards and have airline frequent flier accounts. Perhaps the weirdest thing about my internet behavior is that I’m not on any social media platforms. That might make me a freak, but honestly it’s good for my productivity. In general, security experts aren’t paranoid; we just have a better understanding of the trade-offs we’re doing. Like everybody else, we regularly give up privacy for convenience. We just do it knowingly and consciously.

GAZETTE: What else do you do to protect your privacy online? Do you use encryption for your email?

SCHNEIER: I have come to the conclusion that email is fundamentally insecurable. If I want to have a secure online conversation, I use an encrypted chat application like Signal. By and large, email security is out of our control. For example, I don’t use Gmail because I don’t want Google having all my email. But last time I checked, Google has half of my email because you all use Gmail.

GAZETTE: What does Google know about you?

SCHNEIER: Google’s not saying because they know it would freak people out. But think about it, Google knows quite a lot about all of us. No one ever lies to a search engine. I used to say that Google knows more about me than my wife does, but that doesn’t go far enough. Google knows me even better, because Google has perfect memory in a way that people don’t.

GAZETTE: Is Google the “Big Brother?”

SCHNEIER: “Big Brother” in the Orwellian sense meant big government. That’s not Google, and that’s not even the NSA. What we have is many “Little Brothers”: Google, Facebook, Verizon, etc. They have enormous amounts of data on everybody, and they want to monetize it. They don’t want to respect your privacy.

GAZETTE: In your book “Data and Goliath: The Hidden Battles to Collect Your Data and Control Your World,” you recommend a few strategies for people to protect their privacy online. Which one is the most effective?

SCHNEIER: Unfortunately, we live in a world where most of our data is out of our control. It’s in the cloud, stored by companies that may not have our best interests at heart. So, while there are technical strategies people can employ to protect their privacy, they’re mostly around the edges. The best recommendation I have for people is to get involved in the political process. The best thing we can do as consumers and citizens is to make this a political issue. Force our legislators to change the rules.

Opting out doesn’t work. It’s nonsense to tell people not to carry a credit card or not to have an email address. And “buyer beware” is putting too much onus on the individual. People don’t test their food for pathogens or their airlines for safety. The government does it. But the government has failed in protecting consumers from internet companies and social media giants. But this will come around. The only effective way to control big corporations is through big government. My hope is that technologists also get involved in the political process — in government, in think-tanks, universities, and so on. That’s where the real change will happen. I tend to be short-term pessimistic and long-term optimistic. I don’t think this will do society in. This is not the first time we’ve seen technological changes that threaten to undermine society, and it won’t be the last.

This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

Cherry Blossom: How the CIA can hack into your internet router

Sputnik

Wi-Fi routers typically sit in dusty corners of homes and offices, quietly transmitting internet accessibility to computers, tablets and phones in its immediate vicinity. However, these unpretentious devices are a goldmine for hackers – and were specifically targeted by the US Central Intelligence Agency, the latest Wikileaks release has revealed.

The release is the latest instalment of Wikileaks’ “Vault7” series, which the group has been drip-feeding to the public since March. Previous trickles have revealed CIA attempts to hack office computers, televisions and phones, among many other shock exposures.

This time, the documents contain detailed information on the CIA’s router hacking “toolkit” — and how the Agency sought to leverage common vulnerabilities in routers sold by companies such as D-Link and Linksys. The techniques range from hacking network passwords to rewriting device firmware to remotely monitor traffic flowing across a target’s network.

While few may have stopped to consider a router’s attractiveness to a hacker, in truth the devices are an obviously attractive entry point — routers typically aren’t equipped with interfaces beyond on/off and reset buttons, and have no means of alerting users they have been compromised.

A router could be hacked for years, with a user’s every online action tracked and recorded, without anyone being any the wiser.

The CIA’s router-hacking approach begins with a tool — “Claymore” — which scans a network to identify devices and then launches two exploiters — “Tomato” and “Surfside” — the former is noted to target vulnerabilities in at least two routers sold by D-Link and Linksys, and steals those devices’ administrative passwords. Moreover, the documents state at least two other routers sold by Linksys could be targeted with “Tomato” after a mere few weeks of development.

“Surfside” is left largely unexplained, though the documents hint it may abuse a protocol called Universal Plug and Play. Oft dubbed UPNP, and embedded in around 7,000 different devices — including routers, printers, media players and smart TVs — tech security experts have long-warned it poses a potential risk.

As the documents date back to early 2016, it’s unclear whether D-Link or Linksys have identified and/or rectified these vulnerabilities — however, routers are difficult to manually update, and given their ubiquity, providers are reluctant to dispatch professional staff to do so, instead obliging consumers to do so themselves. Any vulnerability in a router can be left to smolder for years before correction, if at all — and the aforementioned lack of a “warning” system alerting users to threats, ala antivirus software, means users may never discover if their device is vulnerable.

Another means of access mentioned in the papers is the failure of users to change default admin passwords — often, individuals are simply unaware there is an admin password, and it can be amended. This likewise offers unbridled access to the contents of an individual’s router — after access, a hacker or CIA agent could then install custom firmware (the CIA’s is called Flytrap) on the router monitor a target’s browsing, strip SSL encryption from webpages visited, and even inject other exploits into their traffic, designed to offer access directly to the target’s PC or phone. Yet another piece of software, CherryTree, serves as a command-and-control system, allowing operators to monitor and update infected network devices from a browser-based interface called CherryWeb.

Nonetheless, while acknowledging the exposures are “alarming,” Matthew Hickey, Founder of Hacker House, isn’t shocked the CIA would target routers.

“The information security community has been warning about this risk since 2005, if not before. Still, while technically adept users likely won’t be impacted by the technique, it does potentially mean the CIA can access millions of web histories — and there’s the prospect of it easily being misused and abused in surveillance operations. The only Godsend is the CIA wouldn’t be able to do this remotely or in bulk — they need to be in the nearby vicinity of a router network to access it, from a car or van or similar,” Mr. Hickey told Sputnik.

Ultimately, given the evident insecurities ingrained in average Wi-Fi routers, it’s perhaps unsurprising the world’s most well-financed spying group has exploited them — and maybe still does. Wikileaks’ latest revelations serve as a palpable reminder to net users to update their routers regularly, and change their default admin passwords. Otherwise, potentially no private, internet-equipped home is safe from US surveillance.

Flat Earth Psychological Operations – The Flat Earth PSYOP

Image result for flat earth map
A couple things I see with this flavor of psychological operation is a dividing of the conspiracy demographic and heavily discrediting the flat earth segment of that demographic while effectively assassinating the credibility of conspiracy truth by association. The CIA has a major agenda to misrepresent and/or discredit conspiracy aware persons, as seen with their Operation Mockingbird NLP tactic of molding the societal view and weaponizing the term “conspiracy theorist” after the JFK assassination.

In an attempt to help people avoid being controlled opposition, here are some points for a spherical earth and why Flat Earth is a PSYOP:

Why Earth is (Generally) a Sphere:

• Day and night happen simultaneously in different time zones
• Time zones are lapsed in a fashion that completely matches a spherical earth
• Flat earth sun models are completely contrived (Especially if you throw in seasons and eclipses)
• The shape of Planet Earth is witnessed with it’s shadow during a lunar eclipse. Do flat earth lunar and solar eclipse models make sense at all?
• The Equator & it’s temperatures don’t make much sense in a flat earth model when you add the Arctic Circle
• Eratosthenes’ calculation of Earth’s circumference would not work in a flat earth model[1]
• All visible planets in our solar system + the Sun are spherical
• The cosmos is full of spherical objects
• A curved open atmosphere has been proven to me, as I have witnessed a large asteroid fly in and out of the atmosphere. This could not happen with a firmament or flat earth.
• You can witness the curvature of the Earth by watching a ship come within the furthest line of sight
• Balloons can take a video camera up into the Earth’s upper atmosphere
• ‘Fish Eye’ is not a legible explanation for the full curve witnessed by balloons in the upper atmosphere
• I have caught flat earth videos with proven lies with simple fact checking
• Proven Liar: Math Boylan saying a Moon of Mars is “Opi papa” in his flat earth presentation

“The shadow government is always thinking of ways to discredit the truth.”
~Omnisense

Motives to Promote Flat Earth:

• Flat Earth is worse for credibility than nearly any other belief
• CIA & co-conspirators have a yearning agenda to discredit conspiracy truths and conspiracy aware people – What does flat earth do? Flat earthers are discredited to the point of near complete marginalization, and conspiracy aware people are discredited by association
• Predictive programming related to this new surge of flat earth material must include a demographic of people that associate irrational beliefs to general conspiracy aware people
• Each new piece of conspiracy truth a flat earther shares is further discredited by association
• Who does this surge in flat earth material tangibly benefit? It discredits conspiracy truths, so obviously it benefits those involved in a pervasive conspiracy (e.g. The CIA or perhaps any other Western intelligence agency)
• Flat Earth as an electromagnetic mind control eugenics option – Highly controversial flat earth beliefs makes it harder to find a suitable partner
• Flat Earth to discredit potentially the best truth source on the internet (Youtube)
• Making a mockery of alt media
• Division of conspiracy belief prone demographics (Even I’m guilty of not following a fellow truther due to flat earth being in their twitter bio)
• Creates an environment where alt media appears absurd to the scientific community, gives them a sample of irrationality to over-simplify to all conspiracy believers
• Flat Earth as a stratagem to divide & control the opposition

Flat Earth PSYOP Methodology:

• Electromagnetic mind control augments all major psychological operations (Flat Earth is no different)
• Electronic control grid can make a concept viral (i.e. Assisted with flat earth)
• Resourceful use of the idiosyncrasies & deceptive nuances of the universe to persuade to a false conclusion
• Use of illusions & trickery in videos – Video hoaxes / Optical illusions
• Perspectives based around the quackery of modern science and/or NASA
• Bribery / Paying people off to promote the flat earth false ideology (Evidenced below in an image of an email)
• Neural monitoring of PSYOP consumers to better hone & craft content
• Neural monitoring of consumers of flat earth material to better hone PSYOPS
• Some flat earthers would not be flat earthers without electromagnetic mind control
• Tax payer dollars funneled into strategic mass deception
• Information warfare weaponized against the civilian population

“The black ops sources operate most effectively if their presence is unknown.”
~Omnisense
Alt Media Bribery
Suspiciously a “group of elite business professionals” are paying popular alt media people off to promote flat earth. Something tells me this has a CIA or U.S Military tax-payer dollar amount attached to it…

Matthew Boylan says he worked for NASA as an artist and is cited as a whistleblower of Flat Earth. I watched the best Math Boylan video I could find and fact checked some of the things that can be fact checked out of the video. For example Math Boylan claims he worked on a fake image for a Moon of Mars named “Opi Papa”, well Opi Papa is not a known Mars Moon. Now why on earth would a otherwise bright guy like Math Boylan promote flat earth? Is he being paid off like one might suggest after seeing the 4biddenknowledge attempted bribe? Does he just not value the truth of his alleged mission and is willing to blatantly fabricate things?

Debunked
Ironically, the flat earth theory can be easily debunked simply isolated to the material within flat earth videos themselves if you look hard enough.

This Flat Earth video can be debunked with a simple straight line (Note the title of the video):

suckered in by this transparent pseudo-scientific sham.” ~Sean Caiside of HenryMakow.com

Nor is there any reason to stop questioning every aspect of those various disciplines of modern science which have been shown to fall short … some woefully short of the mark. However, the [Flat Earth Conspiracy] was designed from the get-go to take any rational discussion into a completely irrational direction.[3]”

Article Snip taken from HenryMakow.com:”About 1 year ago, conspiracy youtubers started getting flooded with flat earth video recommendations even though they had previously never watched a flat earth video in their life. Cass Sunstein, … chief Obama administration propagandist describes this technique in his book “Nudge.” The technique is to target groups whose opinion they want to shape and gently nudge in the certain directions with several techniques. These include infiltrators and internet forums or comments sections of articles as well as using connections with websites such as youtube to give people recommendations based on their data to push them where they need to go.

I have come across many people who just one year ago were speaking serious truths. Now all they want to talk about is the flat earth, something of no consequence compared to the murder of almost all of humanity.

These people have been NEUTRALIZED.[2]”

Talk about throwing the baby out with the bath water. There is no astronomical scientific truth that the Flat Earthers have left unassailed. You name it — gravity, a spherical Earth and other planetary orbs, rotational movement of the planets. planetary revolutions around the Sun — they throw it all out and label it as ‘NASA lies’.[5]”

Flat Earthers & Auto-Hoaxers
Flat Earth has taken like wildfire, and so has a somewhat new phenomenon along with it termed as the ‘auto-hoaxer’ crowd. This crowd insists that every single event formerly & credibly termed false flags are actually hoaxes where crisis actors are used and the victims are carted off to crisis actor island… While I personally do find it credible that the shadow government would hoax events, this auto-hoaxer crowd has been insidious to the credibility of conspiracy truth in a way similar to flat earth. All it takes is a precisely calculated predictive programming to flare up any auto-hoaxer. If comments and standard psychology are any indication, alt media consumers need much better discernment & critical thinking skills and much less gullibility. Society is rife with imbalances, conspiracy believers believe too much and perma-skeptics never get any deeper truth right. Somewhere in between those 2 demographics lies the truth and the formula to obtain the truth…

Antarctic Ice Shelf Destabilized as Race for Ancient Alien Artifacts & New Weapons Heats Up ~ Dr Michael Salla

antartic-alien-artifacts1

By Dr Michael Salla and Corey Goode

A multinational effort to excavate key regions of Antarctica in search of artifacts from a flash frozen alien civilization created by refugees is destabilizing the continent’s massive ice shelves, according to secret space program whistleblower Corey Goode. He furthermore reveals that secret military bases in Antarctica are using some of the artifacts for weapons development in violation of the 1959 Antarctic Treaty, which stipulates that the continent’s resources will be only used for scientific purposes.

This article is the third in a series [click for Part One and Part Two]. Corey’s written contribution to this final installment has led to it being our first collaborative writing venture. To identify who is writing for the reader, I [Michael Salla] will take the role of the narrator and distinguish when Corey is directly contributing in his own words, as opposed to me paraphrasing his briefing material.

Disclosure of the Antarctica ruins is still imminent, Corey reports, as a number of key variables impact on when and how much is to be revealed to the world about the discoveries while maintaining secrecy about the ongoing military programs to weaponize alien artifacts.

In a detailed briefing given to me on March 16, 2017, Corey shared additional details about the “Pre-Adamite” civilization supplementing the data he previously put out. This new information was originally slated for release in an article, “Endgame III”, as the sequel to the popular Endgame II article and video which focused on secret Antarctica excavations.

Corey said earlier that the extraterrestrial civilization, identified by him as Pre-Adamites, first arrived 55,000 to 60,000 years ago and established outposts all over Antarctica which notably has a land mass almost twice the size of the contiguous United States. He described them as standing approximately 12-14 feet in height and possessing elongated skulls.

Corey also described how they created a hybrid species, Homo Capensis according to anthropological classification, which became ruling elites, or demigods, in ancient South American, Asian and European societies.

In the March 16 briefing, Corey began by explaining that the Pre-Adamites had established their main base right over “Ancient Builder Race” technology, which included a “stargate” or “wormhole” device very similar to that depicted in the popular Science Fiction show, Stargate SG-1.

Corey said that this show was an example of a soft disclosure in which the U.S. Air Force took the lead in revealing key elements of the technologies developed by the Ancient Builder Race, who had established a travel grid throughout the galaxy using traversable wormholes hundreds of millions, if not billions, of years ago.

When the Pre-Adamites first arrived in Antarctica, they quickly asserted control through their advanced technologies over this area populated by human settlements at the time.

With their advanced medical technologies, the Pre-Adamites then began many genetic experiments, and created hybrids that became a servant class. Corey previously released his description of the flash frozen bodies of the bioengineered hybrids (Homo Capensis) during his latest visit to Antarctica in early January of this year.

Corey explained that the Pre-Adamite programs interrupted 22 genetic experiments being run by human-looking extraterrestrials first established 500 thousand years ago. In a prior report, Corey elaborated that a “Super Federation” comprising 40-60 of these races had established competing genetic engineering programs with surface humanity.

Corey also described how the Pre-Adamites engaged in conflict with the human-looking ETs running their 22 genetic experiments, as well as Reptilians doing likewise, for global influence.

Given that the Pre-Adamites had established a physical presence on Earth, this gave them an advantage in establishing ruling bloodlines over the Americas, Asia and Europe, as explained in a previous article.

At the same time, humans who had escaped into the Earth’s interior to avoid multiple surface catastrophes monitored how the different extraterrestrial races competed against each other for influence and power over surface humanity who was still recovering from global catastrophes.

One of the Inner Earth races that pride themselves on their pure human bloodlines, the Anshar, had a historic connection to the human settlements in Antarctica. However, the Anshar did not cooperate with the Pre-Adamites because they considered them to be sociopaths in terms of their treatment of the native Antarctica population and other regions of surface humanity where they had established colonies.

Corey said that the Pre-Adamites treated humans in antiquity in a similar manner to how modern humans treat dogs in terms of cross-breeding for multiple purposes. The Pre-Adamites, along with the Reptilians, were a big problem for all humanity.

The Anshar were part of a confederation of worlds that sought to make things better on the planet by providing knowledge and technological assistance as described in Sumerian cuneiform texts.

In a previous article, I discussed how the Anunnaki (as described by Zecharia Sitchin in his Earth Chronicles series) involved the Anshar and other off world groups, according to Corey’s sources. To help clarify this point, Corey adds:

Anunnaki was a generic term that meant ET or those that come from heaven. This definition will upset some people, so be aware… The Reptilians, the Nordics, The Ebens and the Anshar were interacting with the ancient Sumerians to assist them in the recovery of their civilization after the great catastrophe that destroyed Atlantis. The Anunnaki were indeed the Reptilians, but the other groups that interacted with them were also referred to by this same name (according to my info in the programs).

Corey said that a small number of Pre-Adamites survived the catastrophe that flash froze Antarctic regions by going inside stasis chambers located in the largest of their three motherships. These ships are miles long, and not 30 miles long as reported earlier.

The additional information released by Corey suggests there are many risks in waking up the Pre-Adamites who would likely attempt to reassert their authority by utilizing their advanced technologies, including the little understood “Builder race technology”. Here, Corey adds:

The groups in charge of these excavated locations are taking precautions, i.e. Mini-Nukes with “deadman’s Triggers”, in case these beings become hostile (for reference, see the movie Prometheus).

This leads us directly to the secret excavations currently underway of the Pre-Adamites’ bases and ships.

Secret Antarctica Excavations

Corey disclosed that excavations are occurring in multiple places in Antarctica by different nations, which in some cases are in direct competition to get the most advanced technologies. The goal is to eventually disclose some of these, but many technologies, especially those that are clearly extraterrestrial in origin will be not be released, at least to begin with.

Corey said that all the nations involved in the Antarctica excavations are capable of making a disclosure announcement on their own, but they are all participating in negotiations to do so in a coordinated manner.

Corey thinks the Antarctica disclosures will begin in tandem with prosecutions of the elites involved in pedophilia, human trafficking and other crimes, which includes the blackmailing of leading politicians, academics, industrialists and military officials. He says that the recent Trump administration action to sack 46 District Attorneys was due to their inaction in moving forward with such prosecutions.

Alternatively, the Russians, the Chinese, or smaller nations could begin the Antarctica announcements, if negotiations drag out and the U.S. fails to move forward. The former nations are part of what Corey describes as the Earth Alliance. This group has rapidly grown in prominence with economic power mounting in Asia as global Cabal/Illuminati’s power centers in Europe and North America continue to gradually wane.

This is best illustrated by a battle that took place over Antarctica skies in early 2016. It began when Teardrop-shaped ships came out of the sea in the Ross Ice Shelf area and sought to escape into deep space. These ships flew out of bases belonging to a corporate run space program called the “Interplanetary Corporate Conglomerate”.

The ships in turn belonged to the Cabal/Illuminati, who are allied to another program called the “Dark Fleet”. They were filled with global elites seeking to escape anticipated global chaos caused by upcoming Solar events. Read More Here

The Deep State Goes Shallow. “Reality-TV Coup d’etat in Prime Time”

Trump 3

“In irony a man annihilates what he posits within one and the same act; he leads us to believe in order not to be believed; he affirms to deny and denies to affirm; he creates a positive object but it has no being other than its nothingness.”— Jean-Paul Sartre

It is well known that the United States is infamous for engineering coups against democratically elected governments worldwide.  Voters’ preferences are considered beside the point.  Iran and Mosaddegh in 1953, Arbenz in Guatemala in 1954, Indonesia and Sukarno in 1965-7, Allende in Chile in 1973, to name a few from the relatively distant past.  Recently the Obama administration worked their handiwork in Honduras and Ukraine.  It would not be hyperbolic to say that overthrowing democratic governments is as American as apple pie. It’s our “democratic” tradition – like waging war.

What is less well known is that elements within the U.S. ruling power elites have also overthrown democratically elected governments in the United States.  One U.S. president, John F. Kennedy, was assassinated because he had turned toward peace and opposed the forces of war within his own government. He is the lone example of a president who therefore was opposed by all the forces of imperial conquest within the ruling elites.

Others, despite their backing for the elite deep state’s imperial wars, were taken out for various reasons by competing factions within the shadow government.  Nixon waged the war against Vietnam for so long on behalf of the military-industrial complex, but he was still taken down by the CIA, contrary to popular mythology about Watergate.  Jimmy Carter was front man for the Tri-Lateral Commission’s deep-state faction, but was removed by the group represented by George H. Bush, William Casey, and Reagan through their traitorous actions involving the Iran hostages.  The emcee for the neo-liberal agenda, Bill Clinton, was rendered politically impotent via the Lewinsky affair, a matter never fully investigated by any media.

Obama, CIA groomed, was smoothly moved into power by the faction that felt Bush needed to be succeeded by a slick smiling assassin who symbolized “diversity,” could speak well, and played hoops. Hit them with the right hand; hit them with the left. Same coin: Take your pick – heads or tails.  Hillary Clinton was expected to complete the trinity.

But surprises happen, and now we have Trump, who is suffering the same fate – albeit at an exponentially faster rate – as his predecessors that failed to follow the complete script. The day after his surprise election, the interlocking circles of power that run the show in sun and shadows – what C. Wright Mills long ago termed the Power Elite – met to overthrow him, or at least to render him more controllable.  These efforts, run out of interconnected power centers, including the liberal corporate legal boardrooms that were the backers of Obama and Hillary Clinton, had no compunction in planning the overthrow of a legally elected president.  Soon they were joined by their conservative conspirators in doing the necessary work of “democracy” – making certain that only one of their hand-picked and anointed henchmen was at the helm of state.  Of course, the intelligence agencies coordinated their efforts and their media scribes wrote the cover stories.  The pink Pussyhats took to the streets.  The deep state was working overtime.

Trump, probably never having expected to win and as shocked as most people when he did, made some crucial mistakes before the election and before taking office.  Some of those mistakes have continued since his inauguration.  Not his derogatory remarks about minorities, immigrants, or women.  Not his promise to cut corporate taxes, support energy companies, oppose strict environmental standards.  Not his slogan to “make America great again.”  Not his promise to build a “wall” along the Mexican border and make Mexico pay for it. Not his vow to deport immigrants.  Not his anti-Muslim pledges.   Not his insistence that NATO countries contribute more to NATO’s “defense” of their own countries.  Not even his crude rantings and Tweets and his hypersensitive defensiveness.  Not his reality-TV celebrity status, his eponymous golden tower and palatial hotels and sundry real estate holdings.  Not his orange hair and often comical and disturbing demeanor, accentuated by his off the cuff speaking style.  Surely not his massive wealth.

While much of this was viewed with dismay, it was generally acceptable to the power elites who transcend party lines and run the country.  Offensive to hysterical liberal Democrats and traditional Republicans, all this about Trump could be tolerated, if only he would cooperate on the key issue.

Trump’s fatal mistake was saying that he wanted to get along with Russia, that Putin was a good leader, and that he wanted to end the war against Syria and pull the U.S. back from foreign wars.  This was verboten.  And when he said nuclear war was absurd and would only result in nuclear conflagration, he had crossed the Rubicon.  That sealed his fate.  Misogyny, racism, support for Republican conservative positions on a host of issues – all fine.  Opposing foreign wars, especially with Russia – not fine.

Now we have a reality-TV president and a reality-TV coup d’etat in prime time.  Hidden in plain sight, the deep-state has gone shallow.  What was once covert is now overt. Once it was necessary to blame a coup on a secretive “crazy lone assassin,” Lee Harvey Oswald.  But in this “post-modern” society of the spectacle, the manifest is latent; the obvious, non-obvious; what you see you don’t see.  Everyone knows those reality-TV shows aren’t real, right?  It may seem like it is a coup against Trump in plain sight, but these shows are tricky, aren’t they?  He’s the TV guy.  He runs the show.  He’s the sorcerer’s apprentice.   He wants you to believe in the illusion of the obvious. He’s the master media manipulator. You see it but don’t believe it because you are so astute, while he is so blatant. He’s brought it upon himself.  He’s bringing himself down. Everyone who knows, knows that.

I am reminded of being in a movie theatre in 1998, watching The Truman Show, about a guy who slowly “discovers” that he has been living in the bubble of a television show his whole life.  At the end of the film he makes his “escape” through a door in the constructed dome that is the studio set.  The liberal audience in a very liberal town stood up and applauded Truman’s dash to freedom.  I was startled since I had never before heard an audience applaud in a movie theatre – and a standing ovation at that.  I wondered what they were applauding.  I quickly realized they were applauding themselves, their knowingness, their insider astuteness that Truman had finally caught on to what they already thought they knew.  Now he would be free like they were. They couldn’t be taken in; now he couldn’t. Except, of course, they were applauding an illusion, a film about being trapped in a reality-TV world, a world in which they stood in that theatre – their world, their frame. Frames within frames. Truman escapes from one fake frame into another – the movie. The joke was on them. The film had done its magic as its obvious content concealed its deeper truth: the spectator and the spectacle were wed. McLuhan was here right: the medium was the message.

This is what George Trow in 1980 called “the context of no context.”  Candor as concealment, truth as lies, knowingness as stupidity.  Making reality unreal in the service of an agenda that is so obvious it isn’t, even as the cognoscenti applaud themselves for being so smart and in the know.

The more we hear about “the deep state” and begin to grasp its definition, the more we will have descended down the rabbit hole.  Soon this “deep state” will be offering courses on what it is, how it operates, and why it must stay hidden while it “exposes” itself.

Right-wing pundit Bill Krystal tweets: “Obviously [I] prefer normal democratic and constitutional politics.  But if it comes to it, [I] prefer the deep state to Trump state.”

Liberal CIA critic and JFK assassination researcher, Jefferson Morley, after defining the deep state, writes, “With a docile Republican majority in Congress and a demoralized Democratic Party in opposition, the leaders of the Deep State are the most – perhaps the only – credible check in Washington on what Senator Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) calls Trump’s “wrecking ball presidency.”

These are men who ostensibly share different ideologies, yet agree, and state it publically, that the “deep state” should take out Trump.  Both believe, without evidence, that the Russians intervened to try to get Trump elected. Therefore, both no doubt feel justified in openly espousing a coup d’etat. They match Trump’s blatancy with their own.  Nothing deep about this.

Liberals and conservatives are now publically allied in demonizing Putin and Russia, and supporting a very dangerous military confrontation initiated by Obama and championed by the defeated Hillary Clinton.  In the past these opposed political factions accepted that they would rotate their titular leaders into and out of the White House, and whenever the need arose to depose one or the other, that business would be left to deep state forces to effect in secret and everyone would play dumb.

Now the game has changed.  It’s all “obvious.”  The deep state has seemingly gone shallow. Its supporters say so.  All the smart people can see what’s happening.  Even when what’s happening isn’t really happening.

“Only the shallow know themselves,” said Oscar Wilde.

Do your research people. This is a gift. If a military unit begins an operation on foreign land with a specific amount of time and return that means they retreated or aborted the operation. If the people involved said there was reason to advanced our defenses, this indicates there was combat.

You can’t make it up, bend it another way, or come up with another explanation. Either Antarctica disappeared and they couldn’t find it or there was and is a situation.

Ancient technology below. People must mature emotionally otherwise the great power of technology and the mind acts to destroy. Thus, reality has been a show for a long time. If not since the “beginning”.

This is just the beginning!

They called in the sacred knowledge adepts to help find the truth.

Thus began the channeling of the ancient language and the blueprints for the device.

Everyone who just watched knows part of the truth that has been reserved from the public. Now you know and can help others by sharing the video or researching and sharing more information. None of this was hearsay or extrapolated, everything happened exactly as it was described or the entire record of the events were altered for everyone which requires a conspiracy to explain this.

This will be hearsay, but if you research Tesla and radionics you will see it’s all possible and plausible.

The “Fake News” List: The Orwellian War on Journalism and Skepticism

the-orwellian-war-on-skepticism

By Robert Parry, Wake Up World

Under the cover of battling “fake news,” the mainstream U.S. news media and officialdom are taking aim at journalistic skepticism when it is directed at the pronouncements of the U.S. government and its allies.

One might have hoped that the alarm about “fake news” would remind major U.S. news outlets, such as The Washington Post and The New York Times, about the value of journalistic skepticism. However, instead, it seems to have done the opposite.

The idea of questioning the claims by the West’s officialdom now brings calumny down upon the heads of those who dare do it. “Truth” is being redefined as whatever the U.S. government, NATO and other Western interests say is true. Disagreement with the West’s “group thinks”, no matter how fact-based the dissent is, becomes “fake news.”

So, we have the case of Washington Post columnist David Ignatius having a starry-eyed interview with Richard Stengel, the State Department’s Undersecretary for Public Diplomacy, the principal arm of U.S. government propaganda. Entitled “The truth is losing,” the column laments that the official narratives as deigned by the State Department and The Washington Post are losing traction with Americans and the world’s public.

Stengel, a former managing editor at Time magazine, seems to take aim at Russia’s RT network’s slogan, “question more,” as some sinister message seeking to inject cynicism toward the West’s official narratives. “They’re not trying to say that their version of events is the true one. They’re saying: ‘Everybody’s lying! Nobody’s telling you the truth!’,” Stengel said. “They don’t have a candidate, per se. But they want to undermine faith in democracy, faith in the West.”

No Evidence

Typical of these recent mainstream tirades about this vague Russian menace, Ignatius’s column doesn’t provide any specifics regarding how RT and other Russian media outlets are carrying out this assault on the purity of Western information. It’s enough to just toss around pejorative phrases supporting an Orwellian solution, which is to stamp out or marginalize alternative and independent journalism, not just Russian.

Ignatius writes:

“Stengel poses an urgent question for journalists, technologists and, more broadly, everyone living in free societies or aspiring to do so. How do we protect the essential resource of democracy — the truth — from the toxin of lies that surrounds it? It’s like a virus or food poisoning. It needs to be controlled. But how?

“Stengel argues that the U.S. government should sometimes protect citizens by exposing ‘weaponized information, false information’ that is polluting the ecosystem. But ultimately, the defense of truth must be independent of a government that many people mistrust. ‘There are inherent dangers in having the government be the verifier of last resort,’ he argues.”

By the way, Stengel is not the fount of truth-telling, as he and Ignatius like to pretend. Early in the Ukraine crisis, Stengel delivered a rant against RT that was full of inaccuracies — or what you might call “fake news.” Yet, what Stengel and various mainstream media outlets appear to be arguing for is the creation of a “Ministry of Truth” managed by mainstream U.S. media outlets and enforced by Google, Facebook and other technology platforms.

In other words, once these supposedly responsible outlets decide what the “truth” is, then questioning that narrative will earn you “virtual” expulsion from the marketplace of ideas, possibly eliminated via algorithms of major search engines or marked with a special app to warn readers not to believe what you say, a sort of yellow Star of David for the Internet age.

And then there’s the possibility of more direct (and old-fashioned) government enforcement by launching FBI investigations into media outlets that won’t toe the official line. (All of these “solutions” have been advocated in recent weeks.)

On the other hand, if you do toe the official line that comes from Stengel’s public diplomacy shop, you stand to get rewarded with government financial support. Stengel disclosed in his interview with Ignatius that his office funds “investigative” journalism projects. “How should citizens who want a fact-based world combat this assault on truth?” Ignatius asks, adding: “Stengel has approved State Department programs that teach investigative reporting and empower truth-tellers.”

Buying Propaganda

After reading Ignatius’s column, I submitted a question to the State Department asking for details on this “journalism” and “truth-telling” funding that is coming from the U.S. government’s top propaganda shop, but I have not received an answer. But we do know that the U.S. government has been investing tens of millions of dollars in various media programs to undergird Washington’s desired narratives.

For instance, in May 2015, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) issued a fact sheet summarizing its work financing friendly journalists around the world, including “journalism education, media business development, capacity building for supportive institutions, and strengthening legal-regulatory environments for free media.”

USAID estimated its budget for “media strengthening programs in over 30 countries” at $40 million annually, including aiding “independent media organizations and bloggers in over a dozen countries,” In Ukraine before the 2014 coup ousting elected President Viktor Yanukovych and installing a fiercely anti-Russian and U.S.-backed regime, USAID offered training in “mobile phone and website security,” skills that would have been quite helpful to the coup plotters.

USAID, working with currency speculator George Soros’s Open Society, also has funded the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project, which engages in “investigative journalism” that usually goes after governments that have fallen into disfavor with the United States and then are singled out for accusations of corruption. The USAID-funded OCCRP collaborates with Bellingcat, an online investigative website founded by blogger Eliot Higgins.

Higgins has spread misinformation on the Internet, including discredited claims implicating the Syrian government in the sarin attack in 2013 and directing an Australian TV news crew to what appeared to be the wrong location for a video of a BUK anti-aircraft battery as it supposedly made its getaway to Russia after the shoot-down of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 in 2014.

the-orwellian-war-on-skepticism-fake-news-ron-paul-fb-jpg

Despite his dubious record of accuracy, Higgins has gained mainstream acclaim, in part, because his “findings” always match up with the propaganda theme that the U.S. government and its Western allies are peddling. Higgins is now associated with the Atlantic Council, a pro-NATO think tank which is partially funded by the U.S. State Department.

Beyond funding from the State Department and USAID, tens of millions of dollars more are flowing through the U.S.-government-funded National Endowment for Democracy, which was started in 1983 under the guiding hand of CIA Director William Casey. NED became a slush fund to help finance what became known, inside the Reagan administration, as “perception management”, the art of controlling the perceptions of domestic and foreign populations.

The Emergence of StratCom

Last year, as the New Cold War heated up, NATO created the Strategic Communications Command in Latvia to further wage information warfare against Russia and individuals who were contesting the West’s narratives.

As veteran war correspondent Don North reported in 2015 regarding this new StratCom:

“The U.S. government has come to view the control and manipulation of information as a ‘soft power’ weapon, merging psychological operations, propaganda and public affairs under the catch phrase ‘strategic communications.’

“This attitude has led to treating psy-ops — manipulative techniques for influencing a target population’s state of mind and surreptitiously shaping people’s perceptions — as just a normal part of U.S. and NATO’s information policy.”

Now, the European Parliament and the U.S. Congress are moving to up the ante, passing new legislation to escalate “information warfare.” Last Wednesday, U.S. congressional negotiators approved $160 million to combat what they deem foreign propaganda and the alleged Russian campaign to spread “fake news.” The measure is part of the National Defense Authorization Act and gives the State Department the power to identify “propaganda” and counter it.

This bipartisan stampede into an Orwellian future for the American people and the world’s population follows a shoddily sourced Washington Post article that relied on a new anonymous group that identified some 200 Internet sites, including some of the most prominent American independent sources of news, as part of a Russian propaganda network. Typical of this new McCarthyism, the report lacked evidence that any such network actually exists but instead targeted cases where American journalists expressed skepticism about claims from Western officialdom.

Consortiumnews.com was included on the list apparently because we have critically analyzed some of the claims and allegations regarding the crises in Syria and Ukraine, rather than simply accept the dominant Western “group thinks.” Also on the “black list” were such quality journalism sites as Counterpunch, Truth-out, Truthdig, Naked Capitalism and ZeroHedge along with many political sites ranging across the ideological spectrum.

The Fake-News Express

Normally such an unfounded conspiracy theory would be ignored, but – because The Washington Post treated the incredible allegations as credible – the smear has taken on a life of its own, reprised by cable networks and republished by major newspapers.

But the unpleasant truth is that the mainstream U.S. news media is now engaged in its own fake-news campaign about “fake news.” It’s publishing bogus claims invented by a disreputable and secretive outfit that just recently popped up on the Internet. If that isn’t “fake news,” I don’t know what is.

Yet, despite the Post’s clear violations of normal journalistic practices, surely, no one there will pay a price, anymore than there was accountability for the Post reporting as flat fact that Iraq was hiding WMD in 2002-2003. Fred Hiatt, the editorial-page editor most responsible for that catastrophic “group think,” is still in the same job today.

Last week, MSNBC’s Chris Matthews featured the spurious Washington Post article in a segment that – like similar rehashes –didn’t bother to get responses from the journalists being slandered. I found that ironic since Matthews repeatedly scolds journalists for their failure to look skeptically at U.S. government claims about Iraq possessing WMD as justification for the disastrous Iraq War. However, now Matthews joins in smearing journalists who have applied skepticism to U.S. and Western propaganda claims about Syria and/or Ukraine.

While the U.S. Congress and the European Parliament begin to take action to shut down or isolate dissident sources of information – all in the name of “democracy” – a potentially greater danger is that mainstream U.S. news outlets are already teaming up with technology companies, such as Google and Facebook, to impose their own determinations about “truth” on the Internet. Or, as Ignatius puts it in his column reflecting Undersecretary for Public Diplomacy Stengel’s thinking:

“The best hope may be the global companies that have created the social-media platforms.

“‘They see this information war as an existential threat,’ says Stengel. … The real challenge for global tech giants is to restore the currency of truth. Perhaps ‘machine learning‘ [presumably a reference to algorithms] can identify falsehoods and expose every argument that uses them. Perhaps someday, a human-machine process will create what Stengel describes as a ‘global ombudsman for information.’”

Ministry of Truth

An organization of some 30 mainstream media companies already exists, including not only The Washington Post and The New York Times but also the Atlantic Council-connected Bellingcat, as the emerging arbiters – or ombudsmen – for truth, something Orwell described less flatteringly as a “Ministry of Truth.” The New York Times has even editorialized in support of Internet censorship, using the hysteria over “fake news” to justify the marginalization or disappearance of dissident news sites.

It now appears that this 1984-ish “MiniTrue” will especially target journalistic skepticism when applied to U.S. government and mainstream media “group thinks.” Yet, in my four decades-plus in professional journalism, I always understood that skepticism was a universal journalistic principle, one that should be applied in all cases, whether a Republican or a Democrat is in the White House or whether some foreign leader is popular or demonized.

As we have seen in recent years, failure to ask tough questions and to challenge dubious claims from government officials and mainstream media outlets can get lots of people killed, both U.S. soldiers and citizens of countries invaded or destabilized by outsiders.

To show skepticism is not the threat to democracy that Undersecretary Stengel and columnist Ignatius appear to think it is.

Whether you like or dislike RT’s broadcasts – or more likely have never seen one – a journalist really can’t question its slogan: “question more.” Questioning is the essence of journalism and, for that matter, democracy.

In protest of the Post’s smearing of independent journalists, RootsAction has undertaken a petition drive, which can be found here.

YouTube Unleashes Army of Trolls Who Get Points to Shut Down “Controversial Speech”

DOCUMENTING THE DOWNFALL
yttrolls

by Melissa Melton

Everyone can feel the walls closing in on the Internet like the trash compactor scene in Star Wars. Everything from government spying to thought crimes to outright censorship is turning what was once referred to as the new Wild West into an increasingly smaller cybernetic control grid.

Now YouTube isn’t just disincentivizing what it deems “controversial speech”; YouTube is actually incentivizing trolls to “help” shut down what it deems controversial speech.

In other words, YouTube is literally feeding the trolls in order to create its very own troll army.

Let me explain.

Recently you may have heard many YouTubers and alternative media bloggers complaining about having their videos demonitized and their ad revenue taken away because their content is considered “not advertiser-friendly”.

Here is a screenshot of YouTube’s policy on that for the specifics:

ytmonetization

Notice that last bullet says, “Controversial or sensitive subjects and events, including subjects related to war, political conflicts, natural disasters and tragedies, even if graphic imagery is not shown.”

At Truthstream, when we heard people complaining about this, we were actually confused. You see, YouTube has been doing this to us for two years now at least. There is a long list of topics that YouTube has summarily declared are “not advertiser-friendly”. This would include any videos discussing war of any kind (including simply criticizing it or looking at things from a historical perspective etc.), videos discussing mass shooting events, terror attacks, the phrase “false flag” or anything at all whatsoever to do with 9/11, even if it has nothing whatsoever to do with the September 11, 2001 attacks.

And other random stuff too, because as you can clearly see, the ambiguous way this policy is written leaves the door open for almost anything to get demonetized. Many on YouTube use this ad revenue as a way to keep going and offset the hours of time it takes them to create content for the site. Now YouTube is basically saying if you want to make money on the site, you can, you just better not talk about anything YouTube (aka Google, so aka the government) deems “controversial” while doing it.

This hasn’t stopped us from putting up videos about these topics, but a lot of people will be forced to fall in line. Obviously they know demonetizing political videos is going to have a chilling effect on free speech about political topics. On top of that, they are pretty choosy on the way this punishment is dolled out and to whom. There’s a definite and obvious agenda behind it.

Well, now YouTube has taken another giant step toward Orwellian censorship by unveiling its YouTube Heroes program. They even made a condescending cartoon about it with cheesy animations set to adult contemporary music that looks like a generic commercial for buying cheap Chinese crap at Target.

Take a look, but make sure haven’t just eaten because the cheesiness overkill might make you want to throw up in your mouth a little:

In short, YouTube just incentivized being a YouTube troll… although obviously they prefer the (I think misused) term “hero”.

People will now get points for reporting videos that don’t follow YouTube’s ambiguous guidelines.

screen-shot-2016-09-30-at-1-57-03-am

screen-shot-2016-09-30-at-1-56-49-am

This guy pretty much sums up how we feel about this:

We would do a video on this to report on it, but the company behind the cheesy animation has decided to go around flagging everyone who does for a copyright violation.

Oh the irony.

So among the things people will receive points for is “reporting inappropriate videos accurately”. Once they earn a certain number of points, they get to move to the next level. When you get to level 3, you get to “unlock super tools” like the power to “mass flag videos”.

screen-shot-2016-09-30-at-1-59-14-am

How can someone even mass flag multiple videos…? It implies they haven’t seen them all to know they are worthy of being flagged first!

In a world that incentivizes a snitch troll culture, where people will earn points toward more “power” for seeing something and saying something, everyone will become a target. People will turn others in, flagging videos they don’t agree left and right with just to get the points!

And this is how free speech just died on YouTube.

The video above is so unpopular by the way, that YouTube disabled the comments for it… That’s right, YouTube disabled the comments section of its own video! It has 2,940,652 views with 837,768 thumbs down and just 25,083 thumbs up (at the time of writing this). That’s less than one percent of viewers giving this video a thumbs up.

screen-shot-2016-09-30-at-1-56-06-am

In short, we are growing pretty sick and tired of YouTube around here.

As if all of this isn’t bad enough, YouTube does not uphold fair use laws at all. It follows a guilty-until-proven-innocent system where anyone for any reason can strike a video down or steal its monetization and the burden of proof is on the content creator, not the copyright claimant.

We recently had a video clip taken down that we had never monetized of Putin talking on RT.com, a channel that allows for its content to be reposted. Someone had added English subtitles to Putin’s Russian. The video appeared to come from RT and had been mirrored on multiple different YouTube channels across the site, so we uploaded it on ours as well but with a different title under fair use for criticism.

Eleven months later, the person who added the subtitles put a copyright strike on our channel as if that person had a right to RT’s video of Putin simply because she added subtitles. In the real world, that isn’t how copyrights work, and the clip is fair use anyway, but the burden of proof was on us to then start something that we were warned by YouTube is a legal proceeding to prove we have the right to upload a clip that isn’t even owned by the person who claimed copyright. Meanwhile, our channel received a strike and our uploading privileges were restricted until we could prove our “innocence”.

The same thing happens any time we try to report on scientific research (publicly funded, just the way) done at Stanford University. They have a bot that blanket copyright strikes ANYONE who uses any of their clips for fair use reporting.

It is for these myriad reasons that the series of documentaries we have been working very hard on for the past year will NOT be uploaded to YouTube. At least not first. No way.

We are creating a series of films (one is in post right now!) that are definitely on “controversial subjects” with fair use clips, the whole nine yards. The last thing we need after a year of driving back and forth across the country filming and interviewing people and spending hours upon hours at the library researching and writing and editing footage until five in the morning night after night in all of our free time is to have our film demonetized, attacked by YouTube’s troll army, and struck down for bogus copyright claims that spit in the face of Section 107 of the Copyright Act of 1976 which allows for “fair use” for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research.

But… more news on that coming soon.

In the meantime, YouTube has been an invaluable platform for many especially in the alternative media to talk about the things the mainstream media won’t. That’s the whole reason I started this blog back in 2011 when no one except myself and maybe my mom read it. That’s the reason I called it TRUTHstream Media. Because I was searching for the truth. I still am. Now Aaron is with me and I’m surrounded by an awesome community of truthseekers like the amazing gang at Activist Post, Daisy Luther, Brandon Smith of Alt Market, Gary Franchi of Next News Network, Corbett Report, The Daily Sheeple (now with Joe Joseph of Freedom Link!), Popeye of FederalJack.com, and so so many others.

I am thankful to have a place like YouTube where we can question the reality we’re given and share our thoughts and research with the world and you guys talk back. I can just see a day coming in the not too distant future where that will no longer be possible unless we fall in line and stop talking about the “controversial subjects”.

Well friends, you know us. That simply isn’t going to happen here at Truthstream Media.

Sad, isn’t it? The Internet’s Wild West days are over. Well, there’s a reason it was called the World WideWEB after all…

Pokémon Go, the CIA, “Totalitarianism” and the Future of Surveillance

Courtesy of Aletho News 7/29/16

By Steven MacMillan – New Eastern Outlook – 29.07.2016

345345345345If anyone doubted that a percentage of the global population are akin to zombies, the incidents following the release of Pokémon Go have surely convinced you. Despite the game only being released in early July, we have already seen a man driving into a tree and a women getting locked in a graveyard whilst chasing these furry little creatures.

Pokémon describes the game on their website in the following way:

“Travel between the real world and the virtual world of Pokémon with Pokémon GO for iPhone and Android devices. With Pokémon GO, you’ll discover Pokémon in a whole new world—your own! Pokémon GO is built on Niantic’s Real World Gaming Platform and will use real locations to encourage players to search far and wide in the real world to discover Pokémon… In Pokémon GO, the real world will be the setting!”

Pokémon Go, Google, the State Department, the CIA and the DoD

The company behind Pokémon Go is a San Francisco software developer called Niantic, Inc, which was formed in 2010 as an internal startup at Google. The founder and current CEO of Niantic is John Hanke, a man who has connections both to the State Department and the CIA.

Before moving to San Francisco to study at the University of California, Hanke previously worked for the US State Department in Myanmar. Hanke also founded Keyhole, Inc in 2001, a company which specialized in geospatial data visualization applications. Google acquired the company in 2004, with many of the applications developed by Keyhole being instrumental in Google Maps and Earth. In 2003, the CIA’s venture-capitalist firm, In-Q-Tel, invested in Keyhole, with the CIA’s own website proudly detailing this investment:

“The CIA-assisted technology probably most familiar to you is one many of us use on a regular basis:  Google Earth. In February 2003, the CIA-funded venture-capitalist firm In-Q-Tel made a strategic investment in Keyhole, Inc., a pioneer of interactive 3-D earth visualization and creator of the groundbreaking rich-mapping EarthViewer 3D system. CIA worked closely with other Intelligence Community organizations to tailor Keyhole’s systems to meet their needs. The finished product transformed the way intelligence officers interacted with geographic information and earth imagery.”

One of the other intelligence organizations the CIA worked alongside was the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA), which is partly under the control of the US Department of Defense (DoD).

So we have a somewhat enigmatic former State Department employee with connections to the CIA and the DoD, being the CEO of a company that created what seems to be a silly, harmless game. What’s going on?

Selling and Sharing Your Data

Like so many new technologies in our digital age, Pokémon Go is constantly gathering information on the user and then openly admitting that they will share this data with anyone who wants it.

As James Corbett pointed out in his article titled: The CIA’s ‘Pokémon Go’ App is Doing What the Patriot Act Can’t, the privacy policy of the app states that Niantic will share all the information they gather (which is a lot) with the state and private organizations:

“We cooperate with government and law enforcement officials or private parties to enforce and comply with the law. We may disclose any information about you (or your authorized child) that is in our possession or control to government or law enforcement officials or private parties as we, in our sole discretion, believe necessary or appropriate.”

Corbett also details how the game requires the user to give excessive access to Niantic/CIA/NGA/DoD (including access to the users Google account and camera).

Oliver Stone on PG: “Totalitarianism” and a “New Level of Invasion”

Speaking at this year’s Comic-Con, Oliver Stone – the award winning filmmaker and director of the new film on Edward Snowden – had some very insightful views on the new craze and the growing business of data-mining. As Vulture magazine reported in a recent article, Stone denounced the game as a “new level of invasion” and a new form of “totalitarianism:”

“I’m hearing about it too; it’s a new level of invasion. Once the government had been hounded by Snowden, of course the corporations went into encryption, because they had to for survival, right? But the search for profits is enormous. Nobody has ever seen, in the history of the world, something like Google – ever! It’s the fastest-growing business ever, and they have invested huge amounts of money into what surveillance is; which is data-mining.”

Stone continues:

“They’re data-mining every person in this room for information as to what you’re buying, what it is you like, and above all, your behavior. Pokémon Go kicks into that. It’s everywhere. It’s what some people callsurveillance capitalism; it’s the newest stage. You’ll see a new form of, frankly, a robot society, where they will know how you want to behave and they will make the mockup that matches how you behave and feed you. It’s what they call totalitarianism.”

Predicting Human Behavior

It is interesting that Stone doesn’t just warn about the commercial aspect of data-mining, but the fact that the more data governments and private corporations collect on the citizens of the world, the easier it becomes to predict their behavior. It is not just Stone that is warning about this reality however. At the start of last year, the UK governments own surveillance commissioner, Tony Porter, revealed how data obtained from CCTV cameras can be used to “predict behavior.”

As we progress through the 21st century and more advanced algorithmic systems are developed to process the tsunami of data, intelligence agencies and governments will increasingly be able to predict (and manipulate) the behavior of their populations and the populations of foreign countries. We are already far along this path, will the trajectory for the future heading straight towards levels of surveillance far beyond even what George Orwell envisaged; with the fight for digital privacy being a major battleground in this century for those who value freedom.

Pokémon Go looks more like a Trojan horse of the CIA and the wider intelligence-security-data-mining-Big-Brother complex, than just a silly, innocent game.  With all these connections to the State Department, the CIA and the DoD, no wonder some countries are reportedly considering banning the game.

Smile: Your Selfie Is A Mugshot For The NSA Posted

Jun 1, 2014 by Natasha Lomas (@riptari)
snowden-selfie1

The selfie phenomenon is undoubtedly making the NSA’s job easier by producing a mountain of tagged online data to feed its facial recognition algorithms.

A report in The New York Times, based on documents from 2011 obtained by the NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden, reveals that the US security agency’s reliance on facial recognition technology has grown significantly under the Obama administration — coinciding with a rise in popularity of taking and tagging self portraits on online social networks.

The newspaper reports that the agency has turned to new software to process the flood of images being included in digital communication including social media, email, messaging, videoconferencing and other types of online comms. The 2011 documents show that agency officials believe technological advances in facial recognition software could revolutionize the way the NSA finds intelligence targets around the world.

According to the documents, the agency intercepts “millions” of images per day — including about 55,000 “facial recognition quality images” — although it is not clear how many images the agency has amassed in total at this point. The NSA describes facial recognition technology as offering “tremendous untapped potential” for tracking intelligence targets.

As well as its own in-house facial recognition software, the documents cited in the report note that the NSA also relies on commercially available facial recognition tech, including PittPatt — a company owned by Google — to process the data it is harvesting.

Facial images, fingerprints and other identifiers are now considered just as important to the NSA as written and oral communications, according to the report.

The paper says the NSA’s use of facial recognition technology goes far beyond previously detailed efforts. Back in February it emerged that the NSA and UK spy agency GCHQ had run a joint program harvesting webcam imagery from Yahoo users, between 2008 and 2012, which included the collection of sexually explicit material.

While the NYT notes that the NSA does not have access to US state databases of drivers’ licenses or to passport photos of Americas (no such luck if you’re a foreigner of course), it’s likely that the mountain of tagged online data it can now sift through means it can obtain that intel on US citizens from other sources — such as, presumably, Facebook, Instagram et al.’s huge store of selfies.

“It’s not just the traditional communications we’re after: It’s taking a full-arsenal approach that digitally exploits the clues a target leaves behind in their regular activities on the net to compile biographic and biometric information [that can help] implement precision targeting,” a 2010 agency document notes.

An agency spokeswoman contacted by the NYT reporters declined to say whether it collects facial imagery of Americans from Facebook and other social media through means other than communications intercepts. But that ‘no comment’ speaks volumes.

Facial recognition software is about as big brother as technology gets right now. Facebook, which is of course already in possession of its own data mountain of tagged facial imagery, is hard at work perfecting its own facial recognition software, under an initiative called the DeepFace project. Back in March Facebook announced that DeepFace was nearing human levels of accuracy at identifying a face in a crowd (97.25% vs the average human score of 97.5%).

Such commercial efforts undoubtedly make the NSA’s job easier, since the more accurately tagged imagery Facebook has, the more data effectively becomes available for harvesting by the NSA. Especially as US privacy laws provide no express protection for facial recognition data, as the NYT report notes.

That said, an NSA spokeswoman notes that images are considered a form of communications content in the US, so the NSA would require court approval for imagery of Americans collected through its surveillance programs — in the same way that it does to read their emails or eavesdrop on their phone calls. However cross-border comms — where a US citizens might be emailing or texting an image to someone targeted by the agency overseas could be excepted. So it really depends who you are sending your selfie to, and where they live.

In Europe, Facebook switched off its ‘tag suggest‘ facial recognition algorithm-powered feature in 2012, as part of a settlement of an investigation into its transparency on user data and privacy conducted by Ireland’s Data Protection Commissioner.

That facial recognition-software powered feature remains in place for Facebook users elsewhere, including in the US, where the tedious process of manually tagging all your selfies can be speeded up with Facebook’s tech.

But that is, as it turns out, very likely more grist to the NSA’s mill.
